Experience

Editing

My work at the United Nations (UN) involves ensuring that documents are clear, coherent, factually accurate, suitable for translation into the other five official UN languages and consistent with the United Nations Editorial Manual.

At UN Headquarters, I have edited documents for various UN bodies, including the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and their subsidiary bodies. Examples include:

  • General Assembly resolutions
  • Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council
  • Reports of the Secretary-General on a vast range of subjects of concern to the UN, such as children and armed conflict, human trafficking, disarmament, UN peacebuilding missions, human rights, economic development and climate change
  • Budget proposals

At the Economic Commission for Africa, I have edited conference reports, publications related to economic development in Africa and many other documents. Examples include:

  • Reports on topics related to the various agenda items of the Conference of African Ministers Responsible for Civil Registration and of the Statistical Commission for Africa
  • Publications on, for example, illicit financial flows in Africa

At the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), I edited scientific and technical texts, brochures, correspondence and session reports. I managed the entire publication process, from editing, to proofreading, layout, editing of figures and preparation of the camera-ready file. Examples include:

  • Guide to Meteorological Instruments and Methods of Observation
  • WMO Statement on the State of the Global Climate
  • Final reports of various sessions of the WMO Executive Council and the World Meteorological Congress

Translation

As a freelance translator based in Geneva, Switzerland, I translated texts from French and Spanish into English for various international agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), and for a number of international conferences, such as the World Health Assembly and the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology.

  • At WHO, I translated scientific, technical and administrative documents, project reports and formal (notes verbales) and informal correspondence.
  • At WTO, I translated documents on various trade-related projects and statements relating to ongoing trade negotiations.

Technical

I have extensive knowledge of the tools and resources used by language professionals working within the UN system, including the UN terminology database (UNTERM), the eLUNa computer-assisted translation and editing tool, the United Nations Editorial Manual, The Chicago Manual of Style and the Oxford English Dictionary.

At UN Headquarters, I was a Moodle content creator for the Self-Paced Online Training (SPOT) platform, designed to support the continuous development of staff.

At WMO, I played a leading role in developing and adapting Typefi, an automated publishing software used in conjunction with Adobe InDesign, for use in WMO documents.
